M. Aneez Basheer
MM Basheer is an author and educator who enlightens and guides many young minds with his valuable perspective and remarkable proficiency in the Malayalam language.
His contribution to the literature leads him to accomplish many achievements and honors by receiving significant awards and recognition.
M. M. Basher was born on 18 th September 1940 in Kaniyapuram village of Thiruvananthapuram district in Kerala. His father, Mytheen Khan was a retired military personnel, and mother Pazhayapuraykkal Hameedumma, a home maker. After retirement from military service, Mytheen Khan started business in textile and garment making in his home town Thiruvananthapuram.
Basheer was educated in Thiruvananthapuram, Pettah Lower Primary School, Pettah Middle School, and Sree Moola Vilasom High School. For Pre University Course he was sent to Intermediate College, and his B.A. and M.A. in the University College, Thiruvananthapuram. Later he took his Ph.D. from the University of Kerala. On completion of his formal education he worked as Lecturer in Christian College, Nagercoil, Iqbal College, Peringammala, T.K.M. Arts and Science College, Kollam. While working as lecturer in T.K.M. College, he got a fellowship from Kerala University for doing Ph.D. He Conducted research on ‘Poetic Craft of Kumaranasan- A Study Based on his Manuscripts’ under the guidance of Dr.P.K.Narayana Pillai. Subsequently he was posted as Lecturer in the Department of Malayalam, University of Calicut. After retirememnt he continued to serve in Calicut University as the Chairman of Vaikkom Muhamed Basheer Chair for a period of four years. Now he is the Chairman of Dayapuram Al- Ansari Educational Institutions and also the Trustee of Al-Islam Charitable Trust, Dayapuram.
He served so many institutions and academies: Member - Kerala Sahitya Akademi; Chirman -Thonnakkal Kumaranasan Memmorial; Member - Calicut University Senete; Dean - of Language and Literature in the University of Calicut; Chairman - Calicut University Co-Opeative Society; Director - Sahitya Pravarthaka Sahakarana Sanghom; Member - Central Sahitya Akademi; Convenor - Jnanapeedha Award committee; Convenor - Saraswathi Samman Award Committee; Academic Council Member – Malayalam University; Now he is the Member Director of Kozhikkode Public Library Governing Body.
When he was studieng in B.A., he worked as reporter of an evening daily Karmabhoomi published in Trivandrum. He was the member editor of many literary magazines as Grandhalokom, Malayalavimarsam, Sahityalokom, Samskarakeralam, Samakalasangeetham and Keralakavitha.
His entry to the literary world was through short-stories. Very soon he perceived that Fiction was not his field and hence switched off to literary criticism. Early days he evaluated literary works in the view point of aesthetics. He adapted a model evaluating a work through the lense of aesthetic experience and emotional reverberation created in the minds of sensitive readers. Slowly he understood that no literary work will ever live by aesthetice only. However, he realized that no work of literature will endure for long, if it does not address the greatness and depth of meaning engendered by depicting human grief, sufferings and conflicts in life. His concepts of organic unity of a creative work, the harmonious involment of all parts of the work that would attend to the efficiency of the various elements as they work together to form a unified total meaning. Eventually he moved to the conviction that the importance of literature is not merely in its way of saying, but also in what it says about. So he adopted a humanistic-aesthetic approach to the literature.
